Sustainable and ethically conscious skincare
Meet Our Founder
Debra Sadranu arrived in Fiji in the 1990s and founded Spa Academy Fiji, along with a chain of 20 spas in luxury hotels and resorts across the islands. Driven by her passion for empowering women, she has helped many gain access to training and employment opportunities to improve their quality of life.
Today, Spa Academy Fiji is a CIDESCO-accredited school that provides sponsorship, education, and hands-on workplace training. Many of its students, including single mothers from remote areas, face barriers to education and employment, but through partnerships like Nama Fiji's global staffing solutions, Debra is helping bridge those gaps. She also employs graduates at her manufacturing facility in Nadi and across her operations.
In 2014, Debra expanded into skincare by founding Essence Group Fiji, a health and wellness company focused on supporting local economic development. Her deep knowledge of sea minerals led her to explore the properties of Nama, a Fijian seaweed known for its high concentration of skin-beneficial minerals and vitamins.
Through a partnership with James Cook University and backed by the Australian Government's Market Development Facility, Debra pioneered the world's first sustainable Nama harvesting program, integrating it into her skincare formulations.
At The Heart of Nama Fiji
At Nama Fiji, our mission is to create a sustainable beauty brand that champions social responsibility while building a brighter future for both our planet and the women of Fiji.
Our commitment goes beyond producing world-class skincare. We believe in nurturing our community and respectfully harnessing the gifts of nature. At the heart of our values is improving the livelihoods of rural women in Fiji by providing training, employment, and supporting the sustainable harvesting of nama, or "sea grapes," in the Yasawa Islands.
Environmental and social responsibility are not mere aspirations—they are integral to everything we do. Women from Fijian villages dedicate up to eight hours in the water, three days a week, carefully hand-picking wild nama. This sustainable practice allows the seaweed to regenerate within three to four weeks, ensuring that the surrounding ecosystem remains undisturbed.
Through this initiative, Fijian women gain more than just an income; they acquire skills, empowerment, and opportunities for a better future. Learn more about our efforts and how you can support this meaningful work here.
